The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has stressed the need for security personnel to understand and respect the culture, traditions and values of the people for effective and people-centred policing.
Oji Ama made the assertion yesterday when the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr Law Mefor, and the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr Udoji Amedu, paid a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Awka.
The Police boss said effective policing transcends law enforcement, noting that a proper understanding of the cultural heritage, traditions, values and peculiarities of the people was essential to building a stronger relationship between the Police and the communities they serve.
According to him, understanding the people and their cultural environment would enhance the ability of the Police to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
He emphasised the need for sustained collaboration between the Police, relevant ministries, traditional institutions, community leaders and other critical stakeholders in strengthening public confidence and deepening community engagement.
Oji Ama added that such partnerships were necessary for promoting sustainable peace and security across Anambra State.
He reiterated the commitment of the Command to an open-door policing policy, saying the Command would continue to pursue strategic partnerships capable of strengthening trust, cooperation and mutual understanding between the Police and the people.
Earlier, the visiting commissioners commended the Anambra State Police Command for its sustained efforts towards enhancing security and maintaining public safety in the state.
They pledged continued collaboration with the Command in promoting peace and security, positive value reorientation and the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the people of Anambra State.
